Avandia (rosiglitazone) has received attention once again in the news with more evidence suggesting an increased risk of heart problems with its use.
It is known that Avandia is contraindicated in patients with a history of heart problems including heart failure, ischaemic heart disease and unstable angina.
Avandia is metabolised in the body primarily by CYP2C8 enzyme with a minor role of CYP2C9.
At this current point, genetic testing is unavailable for CYP2C8. This testing may be available in the future and may shed some light on the risk of developing heart problems and genetic variability in the way this drug is metabolised.
While genetic testing is available for CYP2C9, it's not currently recommended as its role is minor in the metabolism of Avandia.
