Patient Information

Minimise side effects of drugs with personalised dosage.

Overview

People

Doctors know a patient's age; weight; height; sex; other medications; liver and kidney function; when they prescribe. However, what they don't know is how the patient will metabolise a drug. A person's genes determine how they will process a drug.  pharmacogenomics is the area of medicine that takes into account the relationship between genetics and how drugs are processed in an individual.

Genetic testing can define metabolism status and can help doctors prescribe the right dose level and determine if a particular drug is suitable. This testing can reduce the risk of side effects and sometimes tell if the drug will work in a particular patient or not

GenesFX Health provides gene testing for drugs taken for the treatment of

  • depression,
  • prevention of blood clots,
  • high blood pressure,
  • chronic pain relief,
  • breast cancer, and
  • other health issues.

GenesFX Health has genetic tests readily available nationally using Australia's only NATA accredited laboratory for pharmacogenomics.

Testing is available for more than 40% of common drugs. Many drugs are metabolised by more than one enzyme and many people are on more than one drug at any one time or during their lifetime

Benefits of gene testing

  • Better, safer drugs the first time. Doctors will be able to prescribe the best available drug therapy from the beginning. This will speed up the recovery and increase safety as the likelihood of adverse reactions is reduced.
  • Testing need only be done once in a lifetime.
